The Origin of Beauty

This painting began as a class project in realism. The instructor required us to paint something that looked photo-realistic. We were allowed to choose any subject we wanted. I chose Jean Norris from pop group Zhané (pronounced “Jah-Nay” circa 1994) as my subject.

This was the first time I had attempted to build a watercolor painting in glazes. It took 50 hours of sleepless nights; then disaster struck! I made a mistake which wreaked the painting. The copy you see is the second version which took just as long to create as the first! I have guarded it zealously ever since.
